Dahlias Up Close: A Specialist Talk

1:00pm - 2:00pm

Wednesday, 4 March 2026, until Saturday, 14 March 2026

Discover the fascinating world of dahlias in this engaging talk led by Chris Michalopoulos, Curator of the Rippon Lea Dahlia Collection and an internationally recognised authority on the flower.

Bold, vibrant and wonderfully diverse, dahlias have captivated gardeners for more than 200 years. Renowned for their spectacular colour throughout the warmer months, these remarkable blooms create a display few plants can rival.

In this special behind-the-scenes talk, Chris will explore the history of the Estate’s dahlia collection and share what it takes to care for these exceptional flowers — lovingly maintained year-round by the National Trust’s dedicated Garden Team.

Chris will also offer practical tips and advice to help your own dahlias thrive, from choosing the right varieties to growing and maintaining healthy plants. Whether you favour dramatic cactus forms, perfectly rounded balls, delicate collerettes or charming miniatures, you’ll leave inspired to bring more colour into your garden.
